24 SEPTEMBER 2010 NEW YORK (SOLOMON STAR) --- Solomon Islands Government’s efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) showed some improvements, but were generally off track.
Foreign Affairs minister Peter Shanel revealed this when he addressed a United Nations summit on MDGs inNew York yesterday.
“The MDG benchmark of social and development goals forSolomon Islands showed some improvement, but were generally off track,” Mr Shanel said.
He also said the disparity of progress between the formal and rural sector is wide and need to close with more international partnership on rural and community based investment.
“The number of crisis the global community went through – financial crisis, energy crisis and food crisis last year – and today’s climate change has created pockets of poverty as populations in parts of the country has made compromises,” Mr Shanel said.
He said to accelerate the pace of MDGs, the international community must focus on international programmes that recogniseSolomon Islands ’ special situation.
Mr Shanel also addressed a Least Developed Countries (LDCs) meeting attended by the UN Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly.
He thankedTurkey for hosting the UN Conference of LDCs next year that will review the international programme that is used to achieve LDCs MDGs.
The minister drew the meeting’s attention to the vulnerability of LDCs needs of which new and additional resources are required and requested a global benchmark be established to graduate at least a quarter of the 49 LDCs.

New outbreak of 400 typhoid cases in Fiji
24 SEPTEMBER 2010 SUVA (FIJI LIVE) ---- Fiji is experiencing a fresh outbreak of typhoid following an initial alert at the beginning of the year, with 400 fresh cases reported across the country says national adviser for communicable diseases Dr Eric Rafai.
Dr Rafai told FijiLive there were around 400 reported cases of typhoid inFiji compared to 205 cases reported in the same period last year.
He said one of the many reasons for the increase in the figures was because the ministry’s surveillance and public awareness campaign against typhoid fever had increased, resulting in more cases being reported.
The disease spreads through contaminated food or water and occasionally through direct contact with someone who is infected with the virus.
Dr Rafai added that inFiji , where typhoid is endemic, most cases result from contaminated drinking water and poor sanitation and generally it is the younger age group that falls victim.
The Health Ministry has been issuing precautions on how to avoid getting typhoid such as washing your hands with soap before eating, before preparing a meal and after visiting a toilet.
While drinking water should be boiled, water from rivers or creeks should not be consumed at all...PNS (ENDS)
